Ep. 238: Brent Giddens - Elvis Saved My Life! (Includes “Why I’m Single” and “Happy Place”)

April 2nd, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 238th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! Today’s guest hails from Cleveland, OK and got his start about 7 years ago as an Elvis Tribute Artist. With a wide range of influences and styles, his songwriting has won him multiple awards within the state of Texas. Brent Giddens is a single father of 2 girls who has a wealth of life experiences he uses within his writing. The recent release of his CD “The Red Dirt Blues” and the debut single off this record “Why I’m Single” show Brent as a driving force in the Texas scene! We are excited to welcome Brent Giddens to The ETX ROCKS Show for the first time!

(Courtesy of http://www.brentgiddens.com/)

Brent Giddens has always had a passion for music: instrumentally and vocally. From the age of six, Brent was singing John Denver, Kenny Rogers, to Glen Campbell. In addition to vocals, Brent has played a wide range of instruments including the guitar and harmonica. With the diversity of instrument experience, this gives Brent a wide range of styles and patterns to pull from while writing, performing, and composing songs.

Song Writing: Passion and creativity is what drives him to compose and write.

Taken from his strong Midwestern values, and life experiences, Brent has taken the good with the bad. Single father, with two daughters, he expects to be writing several songs about love, family, and a lot of emotion. Brent enjoys writing creative lyrics that have a simple cadence. Moreover, turning a negative quality or situation into a comical play on words is also a goal for Brent. The country music listener has always accepted this notion with open arms.

Thanks for checking out the 235th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! From his beginning as original lead singer for the iconic Texas Metal band Pantera to his current gig with the 2017 ETX Rock Band of the Year Alan Fox Band, Donny Hart’s musical style has changed but his prowess has become legend. He has become a mentor to many aspiring artists along the way, and he has been an integral part of the Texas Rock & Roll scene for over 3 decades. Donny is not only a fantastic musician and eminent front man but he is also a very humble and kind person! In this episode not only do we talk to Donny but we will also feature 2 amazing live videos of Donny and the rest of the guys in AFB!

(Courtesy of https://www.alanfoxband.com/)

Donny has been a singer / songwriter of renown for over 30 years in Texas.
Born in October, 1963, he was playing guitar by the age of 9, and soon
thereafter began writing his own rock, blues, and contemporary compositions.
Donny’s first band (in 1980) also featured neighborhood friends Terry Glaze
and Tommy Bradford, and, after meeting a young Vince and Darrel Abbott, soon
morphed into the first incarnation of the Grammy Award nominated heavy metal
band Pantera. After leaving Pantera in 1981, Donny joined Dallas / Ft. Worth
heavy metal pioneers Boss Tweed, and toured the U.S. almost nonstop for the
next several years. In 1986, Donny formed the band Assassin, who enjoyed
regional support from radio stations such as Z-Rock and Q102 for their
self-titled debut album. In 1994, Donny moved to the East Texas region
and was recruited into the band U.S Lords, and played with guitarist
Donnie Pendleton for the first time. The band enjoyed regional success,
playing numerous festivals and high profile gigs with bands as diverse
as The Flies, The Animals (featuring Eric Burden), and Quiet Riot. After
moving back to Dallas in 2002, Donny concentrated his efforts on writing
music, and collaborating with other local music projects. When The Alan Fox Band
offered him a spot in 2011, Donny jumped at the opportunity, where he is
currently lead singer and front man. The Alan Fox Band is currently working
on the follow up to their first album, "JuJu Ear Rub".
Donny Hart joined AFB Nov. 2011

Ep. 234: Adrian Johnston - Raised On G.R.I.T’s and Bling! (Includes “Rather Have You” and “Tear It Down”)

March 19th, 2018

Thanks for checking out episode #234 of The ETX Rocks Show! We are excited to introduce today’s guest. Since her debut self-titled EP in 2014 that made the iTunes Top 200 for Country albums, she has taken Texas radio by storm. She made history winning the Ranch Factor 2017 competition that was sponsored by 95.9 fm The Ranch in Ft. Worth, as the first female artist to do so.   With multiple charting singles throughout her career, she is also well-known for creating the Girls Raised in Texas Tour, also known as GRITs, which is an all-female acoustic tour with artists such as Sarah Hobbs, Kensie Coppin, The Rankin Twins, and several other notable women in Texas Country. Her current single, Damn I Want a Love Like That, featuring Jordan Isaac, is destined for chart-topping success! Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to introduce Adrian Johnston!

(Courtesy of https://www.adrianjohnstonmusic.com/)

Adrian Johnston, Dallas native and fourth generation Texan, is paying close attention to the passage of time these days. Whether she’s quickly touring the state on a whirlwind of gigs or radio stops, or pausing long enough to revel in her family’s deep Texas roots (her great grandfather was a cotton farmer in west Texas and a baseball player who played against Babe Ruth!), she fully realizes that time seems to stand still while rushing past you simultaneously. Seeing that the time is now to make a mark in the Texas Country Music scene, Johnston has spent the last several years winning over fans and industry with her southern drawl and charming them with resounding vocals by bringing a bold voice that is unmatched in today’s country music. And it’s paid off as she recently became the first female to win the Ranch Factor 2017 competition put on by 95.9 The Ranch in Fort Worth!

Ep. 233: Mandi Powell - Painting Herself Out of Corners! (Includes “Fly Away” and “Afflicted”)

March 16th, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 233rd episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! One of the hardest things to do in the music business is to write commercially appealing songs while also keeping an honest approach to your craft as a songwriter. Mandi Powell has managed to find a way to do just that. With many different influences this San Felipe, TX native is the pure definition of what a songwriter should be. Someone who takes from the environment around her and transforms it into art! This week on The ETX ROCKS Show we are really excited to introduce everyone out there to Mandi Powell!!

(Courtesy of http://mandipowellmusic.com/)

Through adversity, foundational transformations often occur. In many instances these changes are not often seen to the naked eye. But in some, they can be heard. Mandi Powell’s debut in Texas Music came with “Canvas”, a songwriter’s album with every ounce of emotion worn on the heart sleeve, which the album artwork complements. “Canvas” was also given the RFT Album spotlight soon after it’s release in 2012. Three years later and with much anticipation, Ms. Powell has raised the bar with “Fly Away”. Recorded at Stormy Cooper Studios in Houston, this 10-track album showcases Powell’s vocal ability that is only matched by her diverse and well-groomed songwriting. It is apparent that she has found the secret ingredient of blending an artistic approach to commercially appealing melodies. Through the honesty of her lyrics, one could imagine the hardships and heartbreak seen during this young artist’s life, as well as her determination. Through all this, the foundational changes that have occurred in those three years shows us only one thing: the best is yet to come.

Ep. 232: The Powell Brothers - A Day By Day Evolution! (Includes “No More” and “Coming Home”)

March 12th, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 232nd episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! Our guests this week are both from Houston, TX and classically trained in music at Berklee College in Boston! With influences ranging from blues and jazz to rock & roll and metal, these guys found their niche with a unique brand of Texas country/americana that is taking the state and the country by storm! 2017 changed things for The Powell Brothers though as Hurricane Harvey destroyed their house, their studio and they lost the entire project for their debut album. With perseverance and a dogged never give up attitude, the brothers are mostly back on track and looking to release their debut record this summer and I for one can NOT wait! This week on ETX ROCKS we introduce everyone to Blake and Taylor, The Powell Brothers!

(Courtesy of https://www.powellbrothersmusic.com/)

The Powell Brothers are Country/Americana recording artists from Houston, Texas.

Fronted by brothers Taylor Powell (lead vocals) and Blake Powell (lead guitar), the band is currently promoting their latest single, “Coming Home”, released to radio on November 10th.  “Coming Home” is only the first in a long line of new music to come, as the band is currently working on their first full-length album (‘On My Mind’) to be released in the Summer of 2018.

When asked about the band’s explosive growth and what the future holds, Taylor Powell explained “It all boils down to this; good songs and good people.  We are committed to the craft of songwriting. Our goal is to make every song and CD better than the last, and to surround ourselves with the best people.” Blake Powell echoes his brother’s thoughts and adds, “As we grow, we want to make sure we deliver music and performances worthy of the love and support we are so blessed to receive."

March 9th, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 231st episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! Bursting onto the Texas Red Dirt Country scene in 2017 with his debut single “Don’t Want to Want You”, don’t let this baby faced crooner fool you! His music is a melodic blend of country and rock that has been mixed thoroughly with Texas grit! Reid Farris is a young singer/songwriter who knows how to convey real honest emotion into lyric and melody and we are excited to talk to him today for the first time on ETX ROCKS!

(Courtesy of http://reidfarris.com/about/)

Born and raised just north of the Fort Worth stockyards, Reid Farris has always had country music running through his veins. It wasn’t until Reid moved off to San Marcos that he joined up with a few fellow Bobcats and began making a name for himself playing in bars from the San Marcos Square to the world-famous 6th Street in Austin. With powerful and truthful lyrics combined with smooth and versatile vocals Reid Farris is newcomer on the rise.

After playing with names like Zane Williams and Deryl Dodd, Reid has recently come back to the metroplex and is breaking through in the Fort Worth music scene collaborating with artists like the Brandon Steadman, Skylar Payne, and Ricky Russell. Robert Ray is an aspiring Texas Country Artist & Songwriter born and raised in the heart of South Texas, namely Alice, TX. He is currently working on numerous production projects and anxiously looking forward to future albums written from the heart. In creating the 'Dream of You' EP Album and newly released 'Run Away With You' Album, he wanted to stay true to his traditional country influence, as well as the incorporation of today's Texas Country sound.

Each song was hand-tailored to express its own individual mood and vibe. He is hoping the variety of songs will appeal to all genres alike. Although, each one happens to be his own personal favorite, he hopes you enjoy them as much as he enjoyed writing and singing them for you!

Ep. 229: Kaleb McIntire - True Country With a Rattlesnake Bite! (Includes “Redneck In All of Us” and “Plano, Texas”)

March 2nd, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 229th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! With experiences in Nashville, Texas and even Europe our guest in this episode is no stranger to hard times and “Scars”. With influences that range from Elvis to Strait and all the way to the Outlaw movement in Country Music, Kaleb McIntire has taken an interesting road to achieving success with his music. That road has been filled with roadblocks and changes in life choices along the way, including not giving up on the music he truly believes in! With help from guitarist Bryant Hunter and producer Heath Owen (Son of legendary Alabama frontman Randy Owen), Kaleb McIntire is blazing a trail in Texas and beyond with his unique sound! We are extremely excited to introduce y’all to Kaleb McIntire for the first time on the show!

(Courtesy of http://kalebmcintire.com/)

Landing hard after the success of his 2012 album SCARS, Kaleb fielded offers from several major labels. Unwilling to give up his vision for what his next record should be, he turned down offers and set out to blaze his own path in the country music business. To do so he had to step back, take time to develop his sound, and find the perfect team to bring his vision to reality. It wouldn’t be a quick process. It would take two years.

Teaming up with Texas guitarist Bryant Hunter the two started writing new music and developing a sound that was brand new and hauntingly familiar at the same time.

Ep. 226: Gypsum and the Travelers - Hidden Meanings Everywhere! (Includes “Psycho” and “Tailor”)

February 19th, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 226th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! Emanating from Tyler, TX Jewel Rena’e, Chris French, Nate McConnell and Silas Alexander are a brand new foursome with a fresh, new sound they describe as Indie Pop Folk. Using an impressive array of instruments from classically trained violin to ukelele with bass, drums and guitar mixed in, Gypsum and the Travelers are poised to make big noise in the talent rich region of East Texas. Having already garnered nominations at the 2017 ETX Music Awards they are excited about the next step in their journey after going from an acoustic duo to a full band! We are excited to introduce everyone to Gypsum & The Travelers for the first time on the show!

(Courtesy of https://www.facebook.com/band.gypsum.and.the.traveler/)

J met Chris, a shaggy haired kid with a sly sneaky grin, in the fall of 2010. They instantly started into an insane friendship of insulting one another and pushing each other to accomplish greater things. Chris, a classically trained bass player, and J, a classically trained violinist, met through competition within their shared school district. As they entered high school and tried to find themselves in this mess of life, they lost touch, but never forgot one another, and their friendship really picked up into their adult lives. The band itself started off as a jam session between a couple of mutual friends, and was nothing serious, until drama ensued between them all, leaving Chris and J jamming on their own.

February 9th, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 223rd episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! I am your host Boston Chris. He also is no stranger to the radio and tv, he starred in over 30 national commercials by the age of 12 and has had singles out on radio! But now this Scottsdale, AZ native and veteran of the Arizona Country Music scene is throwing his hat into the ring of Texas Radio with his debut Texas single called “Drunk in my Drink”. Harry Luge is an incredible country music artist reminiscent of a cross between Tracy Byrd and Travis Tritt with some Waylon Jennings sprinkled in for good measure! We are thrilled to welcome Harry to The ETX ROCKS Show for the first time!!

(Courtesy of https://harrylugemusic.com/)

What do you get when you cross the gritty nature of Travis Tritt with the soul of Waylon Jennings and powerhouse vocals of Pat Green? None other than the unique sound of Harry Luge…

Born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, Luge began honing his skills as an artist at the early age of 5 when he participated in a bible church concert. This experience led to the incredible opportunity of being asked by Dick Van Dyke to sing with him at the March of Dimes Telethon in Scottsdale, AZ. This ignited a spark within and he spent the next seven years filming over 30 national commercials for companies like Toys R Us, Captain Crunch cereal, Slip & Slide, Chevrolet and more. These moments were just the beginning of his path to success in the entertainment industry.

She has opened for the likes of Bri Bagwell, Matt Kimbrow, 2 Tons of Steel, Josh Grider, The Damn Quails and many others! For Ashley Plumlee, music is therapeutic, whether it’s getting over a heartbreak or hearing how her music impacts those she performs in front of, once Ashley learned the guitar she was hooked! Having fallen in love with Texas music scene like so many of us, she is now living her dream as a performer and a songwriter, although she still works 40 hours a week!! We are very excited to talk to Ashley Plumlee this week on the show!!!

To purchase Ashley's EP go to https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/ashleyplumlee

(Courtesy of https://www.reverbnation.com/AshleyPlumlee)

Ashley Plumlee is a rising soulful voice in the Texas Country Music scene. Raised in the Central Texas area her love of music has been influenced by the Texas Country counter culture where music seems to speak in a more honest voice. Picking up and learning how to play guitar in 2011 she began to craft songs that speak to the everyday woman in todays america. Never backing down from her convictions, she has stayed true to her art and being a student of the craft continues to grow and learn each day to better her musical talent. Forming the Mistress Derringer Band in January 2011 she began developing her sound and allowing her to appeal to a wider audience. Today she has taken a solo approach with her music, continuing to work with The Derringers. With the self title EP released December 2014, and her 2016 full length release "The Line," she is hopeful that her music will speak to those who need the message of hope, strength, fun, patience and love.

If you missed their episode or this is the first time you've heard of them, you are in for a treat! Crystal has been our favorite vocalist from the first time we heard her sing. Paired with her husband Will, lyrics and music meld together for a sound that will pull at your heartstrings every time. With a sound that fits into no box and a faith that is inspiring, I am beyond honored to introduce Will and Crystal Yates.

As mentioned on the show please check out http://www.peopleandsongs.com/

Crystal Yates was listening to a sermon at Cross Timbers Church in Argyle when she had a musical epiphany. "Stop trying to separate the secular and sacred by treating everything as sacred," implored the pastor, Toby Slough. It was then that the country singer-songwriter from McKinney realized her love of songwriting didn’t require her to compartmentalize her audience or subject matter.

It's had a profound effect on how she approached her music — country, spiritual or otherwise. “If I were a doctor, I wouldn't just treat the people who thought and behaved just like me. I would treat anyone," says Yates.

She and her husband and guitar player, Will, have a new EP, The Other Side, to celebrate, but on Sunday mornings you will find them in front of thousands of worshippers leading the song service for Cross Timbers. "So I write out song prescriptions for my own heart, my friends, my family, and then share in hopes that they resonate and bring some hope and a voice to others.”

Ep. 215: Hubcap and the Loose Nuts - The Blues; It’s About The Heart!

January 12th, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 215th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! Our guests for this episode having been changing the landscape of blues music across East Texas. With five years under their belt and five nominations for Blues Band of the Year with the East Texas Music Awards! With a brand new, full cd release in late 2017 under their belt we are excited introduce Larry Pierce, Jerry McCoy, Nathan Tubb and Tad Phillips. Together they are known as Hubcap and the Loose Nuts! (This episode includes 2 original, full band songs titled “Can’t Stop Thinkin’ ‘Bout You” & “Three Words”)

(Courtesy of https://hubcapandloosenuts.wixsite.com/hcln)

The Year: 2010
The formation of Hubcap & the Loose Nuts actually came together by mistake. After a 16 & ½ year hiatus from each other, Jerry McCoy, Larry Pierce and J.D. Hill decided to put back together their power trio, "The Bare Necessities."
After 4-5 months of rehearsal, the guys got a gig. But a week before the gig, J.D. developed some devastating health issues that would not allow him to play.  Thinking quickly as not wanting to cancel the gig, Jerry and Larry contacted Nathan Tubb, a guitarist that both of them had played with in the past. They made the gig, not really representing them under any band name.  They all figured this was a one-time deal.
As the next week followed, J.D. revealed that his health was not going to allow him to join a band.  So, as not to scrap what Jerry and Larry had blown the dust off of, they asked Nathan if he would like to join them putting together a 3-piece blues band.  He did.
Now, three guys in a band: what to call it?  Jerry liked single named groups, so after researching to see if anyone had the same name; the suggestion of “Hubcap” came about.  Larry like it, but said if they were going to be a blues band that they needed to add a “and the” to the name, as to make “Hubcap” appear as a person.  The result was “and the Loose Nuts”.  So be the name.
The band of three played out through the East Texas area for the next four years.  In January of 2017, Tad Phillips came in on harmonica to add a new dimension to the sound.  The band is now a four-piece.
In the past six years Hubcap & the Loose Nuts has made it in the top 5 blues band category at The East Texas Music Awards, thanks to their fans support.

Songbirds and Troubadours #1 - Heather Little & Kayla Ray

January 10th, 2018

The ETX ROCKS Show is proud to present "Songbirds & Troubadours™", a 60 minute weekly episodic show featuring 2 songwriters and up to 60 minutes of original music! The songwriter is one of, if not the most unheralded arm of the music industry! Our aim is to showcase that craft!

Heather Little was born in north-central Texas. She grew up all around Austin and Dallas and all the music that thrives there. "I just want to make good music. Whether it's rock or country or blues or earthy acoustic- good music moves people. That's what it's about for me. I write songs about my life and real life things; even the hard stuff. It has to be real. We live real lives. I write real songs about that."

Kayla Ray is a Texas Native who delivers country music with rawness and honesty.  Her music is polished by her feminine sass and bright smile. While she was raised solely by worldly experience and heartache, Kayla has had the incredible ability to overcome any circumstance. Ep. 214: Mickey Lamantia - The Truth in 12 Lines or Less! (Includes “How Do You Say Goodbye” and “Outlaw Life”)

January 8th, 2018

Thanks for checking out the 214th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! Mickey Lamantia is proof that good country music can come from anywhere! The Rhode Island based prison guard has toured with Willie Nelson, has won awards but his main focus has always been to impact people’s lives with his music! With his smart usage of social media he has forged a huge space for himself in today’s music world! Mickey has a brand new album “Every Bad Habit” releasing in a few days and we are thrilled to be talking to Mickey for the first time on ETX ROCKS!! This episode includes live, acoustic performances of the songs "How Do You Say Goodbye" & "Outlaw Life"

(Courtesy of http://ml750.club/)

Over all, Lamantia has let country music know who he is with “Outlaw Life,” and that he is here to stay.  He has also been savvy in his mission of self promotion, recently securing himself a big opening spot in Music City this week. “I guess I’ll be making my Nashville debut,” he says. “I’m opening for Mickey Gilley. How cool is that?”

Mickey Lamantia has an interesting take on how he approaches his music. As a correctional officer for the state of Rhode Island for nearly 20 years, he often uses the loneliness of the enclosed walls, and the slow passage of time for inspiration. “The prison has given me a lot of perspective that I apply to songwriting. You have to be rough around the edges to work here. I’ve dealt with some evil people and I’ve dealt with people who just made mistakes,” he says. And though his voice rings similar to modern star, Cody Jinks, Lamantia is far from red dirt country, at least in geography.

Lamantia grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island, a bay city popularized by Seth McFarland’s hit show, Family Guy.   With blue collar Christian roots, his dad worked construction on heavy equipment and his mom didn’t work until the kids got older. As the last of five children, Lamantia jokes, “If it wasn’t for Miller beer, I’d never been born.”
