Ep. 196: Kayla Ray - The Queen of Melancholy! (Interview and Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 196th episode of the show! If you like country music, and I mean REAL country music, then you will fall in love with our guest this week! She is a young singer/songwriter from Waco, TX who is not afraid of using the steel guitar, the fiddle and that country wail in her vocals. Listening to her music can take you back and make you think you’re listening to the female Hank Williams Sr! She got her start as the tour manager for Texas legend Jason Eady and later started performing with him and his band. In 2014 she released her first full length album titled “Love & Liquor” and in 2015 was named “Best New Female Vocalist of the Year” by The Texas Regional Radio Music Awards. She is undoubtedly a breath of fresh air for traditional country fans. Let me introduce everyone to Miss Kayla Ray for the first time on The ETX ROCKS Show!!

(Courtesy of http://kaylaraymusic.com/)

Kayla Ray is a young Texas Native who delivers country music with rawness and honesty.  Her music is polished by her feminine sass and bright smile. While she was raised solely by worldly experience and heartache, Kayla has had the incredible ability to overcome any circumstance. The fire this ability has built inside of her rings loud and clear in her genuine delivery of pure country music. She has surrounded herself with music from our past; growing up she poured over the work of country music giants such as: Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Willie Nelson. Although the influence of these artists is prominent in her strong delivery and original lyrics, she has developed a truly unique and captivating style that is all her own. She is very proud and “blessed” as she puts it, to have had the opportunities that she has had thus far in her music career.

Ep. 194: Hope Cassity - Sometimes Pain Is The Price That Living Brings! (Interview and Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 194th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode our host visits with Atlanta, GA native Hope Cassity during her recent tour to Texas! They chat about her creativeness in creating a story in her songs, what exactly reaches her the most in a lyric and her unhealthy celebrity crush on Ryan Gosling! Tune in for this, 2 great songs and much, much more this week on the ETX ROCKS Show!

(Courtesy of https://hopecassitytours.com/)
It took courage, guts, and strength to brave the loss of her beloved father in late 2015. It was a bittersweet year for Hope Cassity, Nashville recording artist who has written countless songs about growing up with deeply southern roots, and haunting ballads about her father, who has always been her source of inspiration. The ball was swiftly rolling with her career, and her hard work gained her momentum while performing close to 200 dates a year including most of the major songwriter festivals in the Southeast. Cassity was featured on the cover of Regional Musician Magazine, earned two nominations for NCMA AWARDS (New Country Music Awards), took home the award for NCMA for Female Vocalist of The Year, and received unprecedented radio airplay for an independent artist. Her song “Closure” was the first songwriter cut recorded by the popular Indie Rock duo Penny Rae, and it became the single for their self-titled album. They subsequently recorded 5 more songs that Hope wrote or co-wrote on their follow up album “Two”. The videos for Cassity's songs the duo recorded aired on 40+TV networks nationwide alongside major label acts such as Blake Shelton and Lady Antebellum.

Ep. 193: Jackie Darlene - Keeping Her Head Above Water! (Interview and Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 193rd episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode our host Boston Chris checks in with Ft. Worth native Jackie Darlene! Jackie is the granddaughter of legendary songwriter Whitey Shafer, but she is also quickly creating notice for her own style of artistry while still honoring the rich, musical tradition embedded in her family. Jackie regales us with 2 incredible original tunes and shows us what makes her so unique in this incredible conversation!

(Courtesy of https://www.jackiedarlene.com/)
"Some artists sing only because they want to or because it is something cool or fun to gain attention.  It is a passing fad or hobby that they never fully dedicate themselves to.  There are other artists that write songs and sing them because they must.  It is not just a calling, it is a life they were destined to live.  These acts have something to say and an original way to say it.  Jackie Darlene is clearly and wholeheartedly in this latter category.  Growing up in a musical family (her grandfather is legendary songwriter Whitey Shafer), music is something that came natural to Jackie.

However, what makes her truly special is her passion, desire and work ethic.  Jackie is an old soul in a digital age.  She embraces the future and showcases the past. Her life hasn't always been idyllic and she draws from her world experiences to inform her writing.  Jackie has a knack for capturing the emotional rollercoaster of joy and pain that everyone faces in life and matches it with lyrics and melodies that belie her age.

Ep. 190: Riley Redding - Shovels & Strings! (Interview and Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 190th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode our host talks with Lindale, TX native Riley Redding! Riley is a young singer/songwriter who recently released his debut EP "Shovels & Strings" Riley and Boston talk about the new EP, his process for songwriting and where he hopes to take his music! Riley performs 2 original songs on this episode!!

Courtesy of https://www.facebook.com/pg/rileyreddingmusic)

It's funny how something as simple as a guitar can change someone's life completely; after all, it's only wood glued together and a set of strings. However, that is exactly what it did for a 17 year old, Riley Redding. Growing up he had the inspiration and support of his grandma who was exceptionally talented at piano, guitar, accordion and a vivid songwriter. She bought him his first guitar from a small local music shop called Victor's Music Exchange in Lindale, TX. That's where it all started. Night after night he began learning chord after chord and song after song. Practice became second nature. Summers were spent working, laying water line and sewer mains with his father during the day and learning the way of the troubadour by night.

Ep. 187: Sean McConnell - The Song Leads The Way! (Interview & Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 187th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode, our host Boston Chris chats with the phenomenal singer/songwriter Sean McConnell!! Sean is originally from Massachusetts and moved on to Georgia and Nashville along the way to making a huge name for himself in many aspects of the music business from publishing to performing! Boston & Sean chat about the evolution of his songwriting, his approach to writing songs and how difficult it was for him in honing an identity while writing songs as part of his publishing deal! Sean's writing and beautiful vocals are out of this world as evident in the two live, acoustic performances Sean has allowed us to share in this episode!!

(Courtesy of http://www.seanmcconnell.com/)

In today’s louder-is-mightier world, it takes guts to be quiet. But when the right artist summons the courage, strips down, and finds the right songs, one voice and one guitar can make an all-consuming roar.

“I’ve just always been a sucker for acoustic records,” Sean McConnell says. “The bare bones, the stories, the chair squeaking, the fingers gliding across strings. Hearing the sound of the room it was recorded in. A lot of the music I grew up listening to was like that, and I’m drawn to it. It’s like home base.”

With his anticipated new album Undone, McConnell makes a triumphant return to home base. The 11-song acoustic collection captures the singer-songwriter’s two most arresting skills: room-shushing story songs and gut-punching vocals. The project is an inspired re-recording of last summer’s Sean McConnell, with the addition of a new duet, “Nothing on You,” written with and featuring the peerless Lori McKenna.

Last year’s eponymous album garnered serious praise from Rolling Stone, No Depression, Lone Star Music Magazine, and more, and when asked why it deserved an acoustic revisit, McConnell doesn’t hesitate. “The main reason is I’ve just always known I wanted to have an acoustic version of these songs ready for people to hear,” he says. “It’s the kind of collection that really calls for it. I could hear it in my head the whole time, that this record had a second life in a different soundscape."

Ep. 186: Amy Goloby - Love Songs With an Element of Faith! (Interview & Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 186th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode our host Boston Chris talks to Folk Rock artist Amy Goloby from Tomball, TX! Amy is an incredible lyrical songsmith using lyrics and melodies to show her strong relationship with the Lord. Boston and Amy chat about her incredible new album called "Back to New", her process for writing songs, her influences and the differences between her solo acoustic live work and the epic sound from the studio album she achieved with some of Nashville's best musicians! Tune in as Amy regales us with not 1 but 2 great, original songs fresh off her new album and find out why Amy is one of Houston's brightest lights in solo Indie Folk Rock music!

(Courtesy of http://amygoloby.com/)

Amy Goloby’s new album “Back to New” is a folk, Americana mixture of love songs with an element of faith. In the midst of heartbreak, Amy found solace in turning to God, and her hopelessness turned to hope when she realized there was Someone bigger than herself who had everything under control. “I want other people to know the hope that I’ve found in God, so they can find healing from their hurt,” Amy says, reflecting back on moments of rejection and loneliness. With songs about waiting on unanswered prayers, broken hearts, or noticing the “least of these,” this album encapsulates her soul and reminds us where to place our focus when the going gets tough.

Ep. 184: Scott Coner - Trop-Rock By The Creek! (Interview & Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 184th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode our host Boston Chris talks to Trop-rock and country artist Scott Coner, calling in all the way from Indiana! He also shares 2 live acoustic performances with us including the #1 trop-rock song in the country "Sanibel" and the official video of "Maybe She Lied" with Country legend Tanya Tucker!

(Courtesy of https://www.scottconer.com/) I have spent my own life writing songs or thinking about music in one way or another. Of course, like the rest of the world, I have worked to make a living. But no matter what I was doing, there was music somewhere very close to me. I have been in some very loud factories, yet I have always heard songs. I can’t explain it really. It goes so far back that I don’t remember not having it in my heart. I am a writer I suppose. I write music and words. It’s what I am.

Ep. 180: Rob Redwine - Roots Rock Troubadour! (Interview & Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 180th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode our host Boston Chris chats with one of his favorite songwriters anywhere, Rob Redwine! First Boston and Rob pay tribute to Glen Campbell, who recently lost his battle with Alzheimer's Disease by playing a song by Glen's daughter Ashley called "Remembering" and one of Glen Campbell's last songs called "I'm Not Gonna Miss You". Boston and Rob then discuss Rob's music, career, sound and songwriting in depth!! Lastly tune in to hear two amazing songs from Rob's catalog of great stuff: "Moonshiner's Lament" & "Diabolical"!

(Courtesy of https://robredwinemusic.com/) "A winner is just a loser who didn't know when to quit"... a phrase that is written on a wall, in a club in Nashville Tennessee, where Rob was playing one night recently. A phrase that should be his own personal theme song. Considering he's written so many great songs about losers, and being unlucky, and golden boys, and those who seem to land on their feet. He likes to refer to himself as an underdog. And after hearing his story, you would believe it too.
With over 140 songs written, 4 albums recorded, 1 book published, a song that will soon be featured in a major movie, and countless co-writes, you would think that he is far from anything resembling an underdog. Yet he still flys directly under the radar screen of every media source in his hometown. Sure he is extremely popular in other countries and states, yet you almost hear very little about him in and around the metroplex where he lives.

Make sure you follow along with Rob and purchase his music at https://robredwinemusic.com/

Ep. 178: Kelly Zwern - Conversationalist With The Lord! (Interview and Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 178th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode our guest host Terrell "This Intangible Existence" Brinlee of Local Houston Music chats with Kelly Zwern, an Americana & Gospel singer/songwriter from Austin, TX now living in Houston, TX! Terrell chats with Kelly about her songwriting, her hunger for more of the Lord, her learning to play and sing and much, much more! Tune in to hear two amazing, original Kelly Zwern songs! Thank you to www.localhoustonmusic.com for another great episode!!

(Courtesy of https://www.reverbnation.com/kellyzwern)

Kelly got a sudden nudge to pick up the guitar in her early 20's. Songwriting soon became her passion, but she had no musical background. On a whim, she auditioned for the school of music at Centenary College and was accepted. She soon began crafting songs. Her music is clearly influenced by folk rock, blues and Texas rock. With only one song under her belt, she entered a songwriting competition on campus and won second place. Kelly began playing in venues such as Momo's in Austin and Fitzgerald's in Houston. As life ebbed and flowed she continued to be prolific in writing but has taken a long break from performing. She now rejoins the music scene with new enthusiasm for sharing her intimate songs with us.

Ep. 176: Ashliegh Lisset - Music Pulls Her From the Dark! (Interview & Live Music)

Thanks for checking out the 176th episode of The ETX ROCKS Show! In this episode our host Boston Chris chats with Ashliegh Lisset from Dallas, TX! Boston chats with Ashliegh about losing her dad in action, what it's like being a survivor and how she paid tribute to her memory of him by pursuing his and her dreams of being a successful singer. They also chat about her first single having been co-written by Carrie Underwood and her current single being co-written by Kelsea Ballerini! Tune in to hear Ashliegh perform both songs! #PurgatoryPerhaps

(Courtesy of http://www.ashlieghlisset.com/about/)

Ashliegh Lisset, an independent country artist from the great state of Texas, is kind-hearted and cognizant of the impact music has on it's listeners. While this talented, young vocalist has always had a love and appreciation for music, she discovered it was her true passion at the time her world unexpectedly shattered around her.

When Ashliegh was eleven years old, her father, who was serving his second tour for Operation Iraqi Freedom, was killed in the line of duty. Just before his untimely death, Ashliegh’s father asked her to record Carrie Underwood’s “Don’t Forget to Remember Me” for him, but Ashliegh never had the opportunity to fulfill her father’s request. The memory of her father resonated with Ashliegh and she recognized that music helped fill the void in her heart and provided her with an incomparable escape. “I found so much comfort in music. It definitely helped me heal during the darkest moments of my life and continues to help me heal, present day. When I’m feeling down, I can write about it and get all the emotions out.” It was this realization that led Ashliegh to Nashville, Tennessee, where she began her journey as a singer/songwriter.

Some might say the four-piece JB and the Moonshine Band was born the day JB Patterson looked up to see that only three musicians had shown up at his open- call audition in his Tyler, Texas, hometown. Fortunately, Gabe Guevara (drums), Hayden McMullen (lead guitar) and Chris Flores (bass guitar) turned out to be the right three and, after a brief musical and personal get-to-know-you session, everyone realized the stars had aligned to bring them together.

In this show Boston Chris talks to Dan Johnson and Phillip from The Salt Cedar Rebels on location at the phenomenol Love & War in Texas in Lindale! They chat about Dan's incredible grass roots music, staying true to himself in his writing and the importance of telling a story with his music proven by 2 incredible live performances including his latest single "Troubadour's Prayer"!

Singer-songwriter, Dan Johnson's latest album is a superb example of homage and reverence for legendary artistic influences, brought together with the glue of distinct individualism and uniqueness.

Poignant lyrics, rich use of harmony, and a notable focus on composition and arrangement are the hallmarks of Johnson’s albums and live shows. Dan’s lyrical influences such as Kris Kristofferson and Walt Wilkins (who joins Dan on “Troubadour’s Prayer” shine throughout the album with sparing but meaningful use of metaphor and poetic color. "Every time I listen to a Kristofferson album, I think to myself, 'Oh that's where I got that sound,” Johnson remarks. (Courtesy of http://www.saltcedarrebels.com/)
